BLURB

When Trez lost his beloved to a tragic death (The Shadows, Black Dagger Brotherhood #13), his soul was crushed and his destiny seemed relegated to suffering. But when he meets a mysterious female, he becomes convinced his true love has been reincarnated. Is he right? Or has his grief created a disastrous delusion?

Therese has come to Caldwell to escape a rift with her bloodline. The revelation that she was adopted and not born into her family shakes the foundations of her identity, and she is determined to make it on her own. Her attraction to Trez is not what she’s looking for, except the sexy Shadow proves to be undeniable.

Has fate provided a grieving widower with a second chance...or is Trez too blinded by the past to see the present for what it really is? In this sensual, arresting book full of the themes of redemption and self-discovery, two lost souls find themselves at a crossroads where the heart is the only compass that can be trusted...but that may require a courage that neither of them possesses.

TWO BOUNDLESS STARS

I am probably going to be strung up for this review, but oh well. I had such a hard time getting into this book because Trez already had his story in The Shadows. The Shadows was a beautiful and tragic story. I never cried so much while reading a novel. I loved it and still feel like it Ward’s best. “Spoiler” for The Shadows” Trez does not get a HEA, and it is so raw and heartbreaking.

The Shadows was the first time Ward didn’t give us a HEA, it was unexpected, yet the story was unforgettable because it was so tragic. Then here comes Where Winter Finds You and with it Trez’s HAE. I wasn’t interested from the beginning. I know I should keep an open mind, and yes, I want Trez to have a HEA, I just was not invested this time around. Not at all.

“Spoiler” Trez meets Therese, who is a doppelganger for his dead wife. Of course, this causes all sorts of feelings and confusion. Then Hex comes in and tells him she thinks Therese is Selena or a version of her. Even weirder. I would understand that if this series spanned a vast timeframe, but it does not. It all takes place present day. Selena died about two years before the events in this book. HOW is there a fully-grown reincarnation of her? Then when Lassiter comes in and confirms Therese is Salina, it didn’t make sense.

I honestly don’t know how this story could have been improved. Other than not killing Selena, to begin with. I am not a fan of this version. For the first time, I am rating a J.R. Ward book 2 Boundless stars.
