Author Spotlight: Kaisa Clark
We've invited Kaisa for an Author Spotlight, Stormi absolutely fell in love with this book.
Who was your favorite Character?
I loved writing Adam. Even though the book is from Alexa's perspective, the story is largely about Adam coming to terms with his past, with who he really is, and actually letting someone love him. I think he's the character with the most depth and I enjoyed capturing his range of emotions - whether that was putting up walls or finally letting them down.
The feelings in this book were so real. That's why I loved it. It's hard to put into words the feelings of love, but you managed to do that in both the love and the pain. What inspired you to write this story?
I'm glad you liked it! The emotional rollercoaster of falling in love is really what inspired me to write Calm Like Home. I wanted to capture all of it - the rush of falling. The comfort, the peace, the wholeness of being in love. The uncertainty when it's taken away. The agony of the end. I wanted to write a story that could somehow tie all those emotions together for readers and make them feel those extremes right along with the characters.
Why did you choose the type of ending you did for the brother?
I actually started out with the idea about the brother at the beginning of my writing process, and wondered what that would do to a person - to a family. In exploring that loss, Adam's character came to be.
Will you be doing more books with these characters? I had a big hope for Annabelle and Damien! I've certainly considered it!
Annabelle is a blast to write and I'd like for her to finally find the one. :)
Last but not least.. Who is your favorite author?
Saved the hardest one for last! ;) I don't know if I have one favorite. I like a lot of things about a lot of different people's writing styles. I love how Colleen Hoover is able to weave words together and how her storylines flow effortlessly. I love the way George R. R. Martin is able to write such distinctive characters.
I love the simplicity of Rainbow Rowell's writing and how Jojo Moyes can bring me to tears and how I highlighted about half of E. Lockhart's We Were Liars because of how beautifully she captured summer on Beechwood Island. So many people do so many things extremely well!
Make sure to pick up a copy of Call Like Home! In Stormi's words "It was written so well, I fell in love with it."
